The inshore lifeboat pagers sounded today at 1318 hrs, the boat was tasked to go to a vessel involved in a man overboard incident. A crewman was airlifted but his boat was still adrift and coast guard wanted it to be recovered. The inshore lifeboat ‘Bessie’ with Youen Jacob helm and crew Tadhg Collins and Micheal Cottrell responded to the callout. Shortly after launch they were stood down as another vessel was dealing with the runaway boat. Big thanks to the launch crew of John O Flynn, Tom Bushe, Cathal Cottrell, John Kearney and Kieran Cotter.

This evening the crew of Baltimore Inshore RNLI Lifeboat ‘Bessie’ carried out an unusual rescue. A sheep belonging to a local farmer had been trapped on a ledge close to sea level, several attempts over the two previous days had failed to reach the sheep. After consultation with station personnel it was decided that once there was a break in the bad weather that the lifeboat would make an attempt to reach the stranded sheep. At 7.30pm Baltimore’s Inshore Lifeboat launched under helm Youen Jacob and crewed by Ronan Callanan and Tadhg Collins, and after two days on the ledge the sheep was brought safely to shore.

Tomorrow Sunday 21st at 11am Baltimore lifeboat will rendevous with the Cape Clear ferry Dún an óir in Baltimore harbour to undertake a scenario based exercise. With the ferries heading into their busy season, training like this is valuable to both the lifeboat crew and ferry crew. It will help them develope their knowledge, skills and confidence to be able to deal with the events that everyone hopes will never happen. Thanks to the crew, managment and staff of the Cape Clear ferry for their time and help.

The alarm was raised at 12:25 and within minutes Helmsman Youen Jacob with crew Mícheál Cottrell and Ronan Callanan were on their way in the ILB Bessie to offer assistance. They found the 6.5 metre Ribcraft at anchor 100 yards off the Kedges. The divers had not yet commenced diving when their engine broke down. The divers had then thrown out an anchor to avoid being pushed onto the rocks nearby. The lifeboat crew secured the RIB and towed her back into the safety of Baltimore Harbour. All were returned safe to dry land within an hour of the bleepers going off.
