Lifeboat responds to Gorse fire on Cape Clear Island

The Baltimore Lifeboat was launched on Bank Holiday Monday at 7:45pm. A gorse fire that had gone out of control on Cape Clear Island required the immediate assistance of local firefighters. This was the third call the Skibbereen firefighters had attended that day. “The Hilda Jarrett” was launched with 10 firefighters from the Skibbereen Station on board. Coxwain Aidan Bushe landed the firefighters at the pier on the eastern end of the island. The fire at that stage was out of control, lighting up the night sky, and threatening a house. The firefighters succeeded in bringing the fire under control and were returned to the mainland by the lifeboat crew at 2am on Tuesday morning.
