Baltimore Lifeboat in search and rescue
operation at Horse Island, Castletownshend.
The Baltimore Lifeboat, “Hilda Jarrett”, was launched
for the second time in two days at 15:15 on Tuesday 24 May
2005 following an alert from Valentia Coastguard. A small
craft with four persons was reported as being in distress
at the mouth of Castletownshend Harbour.
While making best speed to Castletownshend,
it was reported that all four were accounted for. Two women
had been stranded on Horse Island, after the rubber dinghy
in which they had been travelling got into difficulties, while
the remainder of the party were angling in the bay. The two
anglers managed to beach their craft in a small cove east
of Reen Point when fresh South Westerly winds and a heavy
swell were threatening to overwhelm their small craft.
When the lifeboat arrived at the scene, the
Toe Head Cliff Rescue dinghy had already recovered the two
stranded women and brought them safely to Castletownshend
Pier. In the meantime, the two anglers had made their way to
safety independently.
Baltimore Lifeboat stood by close to Reen
Point while the team from Toe Head recovered the inflatable
dinghy. Once the operation was brought safely to a conclusion,
the lifeboat returned to station at 17:20.
The lifeboat had previously been launched
on Sunday to rescue four kayakers who had got into distress
on a passage from Baltimore Harbour to Barlogue Creek, Lough
Hyne. The kayakers did not sustain any serious injury and
were brought back to Baltimore Harbour with their kayaks.
The crew on board the lifeboat on Tuesday
24 May were, Coxswain Kieran Cotter, crew members, brothers
Cathal (mechanic), Micheál and Brendan Cottrell, Jerry
Smith, and Eoin Ryan.
Slip crew were Gwen Kiely, Aidan Bushe, Vincent
Roantree.
