Hilda Jarrett, the Tyne Class all-weather lifeboat was launched at 00:35, proceeding to investigate and search the surrounding Islands. A white parachute flare was fired to illuminate the scene and help with the better identification of the location of the sighting, with the co-operation of the member of the public who had made the original report.

The area was searched for 3.5 hours but nothing was found. Valentia Coastguard stood the lifeboat down and she was returned to base, ready for further service at 04:30.
