Vessel Aground on Rocks Near Skeams islands

The Lifeboat was called at 14:13 on Thursday 24th May 2007 to go to a vessel in difficulty near the Skeam Islands in Roaring Water Bay, West Cork.

A36ft fibreglass boat, an Offshore 105, with a crew of of four went aground on rocks on the North shore of the West Skeam on a falling tide. The vessel and crew had been involved in a project to survey the sea floor as part of a survey for a Special Area of Conservation. Two divers were in the water at the time that the vessel went aground.

The RNLI lifeboat made two attempts to tow the vessel off the rocks, but fearing damage to the hull secured the Offshore 105 with anchors to await the flood tide. They took one of the four crew back to Baltimore Harbour while the remaining three stayed with vessel to wait for the tide at midnight to lift her free. All of the crew are safe and well. The whole operation was completed in less than two hours.
