Last night at 8pm 31 July 2014 the Inshore Lifeboat was tasked by Valentia Coastguard to assist at a search and rescue operation in Dunmanus Bay. Two casualties and an overturned sailing vessel had been spotted in the water. The ILB had been on exercise off Cape Clear Island and proceeded around Mizen Head and up into Dunmanus bay at 8:40pm as darkness was falling. Two young male German nationals were retrieved from the water by the local Coastguard and were transferred by helicopter to receive medical attention. They had been in the water for over an hour. Helm John Kearney, and crew Pat O’Driscoll and Paul Synott righted and secured the 4 metre sail boat and towed it into Dunmanus Harbour. They then returned in darkness back around Mizen Head. Castletownbere all weather lifeboat had also been on scene, escorted the ILB as far as Three Castle Head. The ILB was back at the Bullpoint station at 11:30.
